Leg Lock Strategy for 40 Plus Grapplers: Interview with Dan Faggella

40 plus bjj

Last week I had the chance to interview my buddy Dan Faggella on the topic of leg locks – how to best approach this aspect of the ground game, and get his thoughts in particular on his recommendations for 40 plus BJJ students.

Check out Part 1 of the interview here:

If you don’t know him, Dan “Micro BJJ” is a well-known BJJ Black Belt and a leg lock expert. At under 130 lbs, he is also proof positive that you don’t have to be a physical specimen to be effective at this aspect of the game.

At the same time, he does not buy the whole mentality that legs locks are “cheap” – or that you need to be a brown or black belt before you should begin learning them.

After training with Dan on several occasions, I immediately appreciated his approach and philosophy, which we discuss in this interview…

He not only looks at legs locks as a valid submission (just like any other), he truly approaches them as a position rather than a “Hail Mary” attempt that puts you in danger if you don’t get the submission. And strategically, they can serve as a great equalizer to deal with bigger, stronger, and even faster opponents (notice I said “equalizer”, not “crutch”).

Much as with my own approach to Jiu-Jitsu, the recommendations he gives are sound and effective for anyone, of any age, but they become particularly useful to older grapplers who may be at a disadvantage in terms of strength and explosive speed or power relative to their younger training partners.

It will come as no surprise that I am a big advocate of fundamentals (not to be confused simply with “basics”). And the modern evolution of Jiu-Jitsu has brought us to a point where leg locks have become more and more accepted as a viable aspect of the game.

In this interview and the technique breakdowns to follow, I’ll be talking to Dan about just how to look at and implement leg locks into your game using fundamental principles of posture, pressure, angle, efficiency – and of course, leverage.

Stay tuned for the rest of the interview coming up.
